Three tips from journalists: remember these when approaching the media with a story idea
There are certain unwritten rules for media communication - at least if you want to get results. Even a good story idea can easily go unseen if it is not presented to journalists in the right way or at the right time. Three experienced journalists gave their tips on what you should always remember before contacting a journalist.
Aleksanteri Pikkarainen, domestic journalist, Iltalehti
The story idea must always include the news. Or at least a person of interest.
Send an email to the journalist with a concise description of what it's about and who to contact for more information. And if there are additional materials, please include them as an attachment to the email.
If you can save your supplier time with modern technology, then use it.
Jaana Kangas, News Journalist, Yle Morning
Know who you are approaching. Understand the different news rhythms in different media.
Think your idea through. What's new or interesting about it from a journalist's point of view?
Approach the journalist in person and your case will certainly be noticed. It's easy for story tips sent to the editor's general email list to get lost because everyone thinks someone else is doing it.
Suvi-Tuulia Palvaila, News Producer, Länsi-Savo
If you approach the local media, remember the local zeitgeist. Why would your idea appeal to people in our area?
Always send a tip, also in written form. In a hectic editorial environment, it's the surest way to be remembered.
Before approaching the media, think through your story proposal. What is the most important thing? Why is it interesting? Who can you contact for more information? And is it possible to interview the "ordinary person" about the issue?
